Mac Award

Trailblazing the Wine Industry:
The Mac Award's Commitment to Diversifying Wine's Future
The Mac Scholarship Award
Purpose
This scholarship supports and empowers African American students in the North Bay Area who are pursuing careers in the wine industry. Its goal is to increase diversity and cultivate the next generation of leaders in ecology, viticulture, lab sciences, and wine business management.
About the Inspiration Behind This Scholarship
Mac McDonald is a pioneering African American winemaker and the founder of Vision Cellars. After beginning his career in the tech industry, McDonald followed his passion for wine and established Vision Cellars in 1995. He became widely respected for his exceptional Pinot Noir and for breaking barriers in an industry where African American representation has historically been very limited.
Throughout his career, Mac McDonald has been committed not only to crafting outstanding wines but also to mentoring and uplifting the next generation of diverse wine professionals. His journey, from enthusiast to acclaimed winemaker, demonstrates that dedication, education, and community support can open doors in the wine industry.
This scholarship honors that spirit by supporting African American students in the greater Bay Area and beyond who aspire to build careers in enology, viticulture, wine science, and the wine business.
Meet the Man, the Myth, and The Legend!

Mac was born the son of an East Texas moonshiner; he didn't grow up in the traditional wine industry, though his family did make their own fruit wines. At 12 years old, he tasted wine for the first time that was completely different from what his family produced, a Burgundy that changed everything for him. After that moment, he knew he wanted to become a winemaker.
